Have you ever been given a piece of advice from someone that doesn’t follow it themselves? Sometimes the advice you’re given can be useful but other times, looking at the one giving it to you can be an indicator of how good that advice is.
Beware of the naked man who offers you clothes
African Proverb
I heard the above proverb the other day and it made me smile. I love how well it sums up this post. However, it doesn’t just apply to you taking on other people’s advice, but how you portray yourself.
Check Yourself
I find it useful to take a look at my own way of being. Before I feel capable of advising others, I need to check if what I say is backed up with proof. It can be that I’ve read and learnt the advice or that I’ve enacted it myself but ideally it’ll be both.
Before You Talk The Talk
It’s not to say don’t ever give advice out to people or ever take advice from someone who doesn’t do what they’re advising. It’s just to say be careful when you do give or receive it. Take a little moment to analyse the other person, or yourself, before accepting something that seems sound at first glance.
